The Benue Good Governance Network (BGGN) has commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for his recent visit to Benue State in the aftermath of deadly attacks by armed militias.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Dr Amase Paul, the group described the Army Chief’s presence and direct coordination of military operations as “bold, timely, and deeply reassuring.” The visit, according to the network, represents a renewed federal commitment to restoring peace in communities that have long been plagued by insecurity.
“For many of our people, this visit came like the first rainfall after a long drought. It was a powerful signal that Benue is not forgotten,” said Dr Paul. “Lieutenant General Oluyede has restored our confidence in the Nigerian Army and in the Tinubu administration.”
Benue has endured years of violence, especially in rural areas where state protection has been limited. Attacks by armed groups have resulted in mass displacement, with thousands living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.
BGGN praised the Army Chief’s decision to visit flashpoints, engage with frontline troops, and consult with local stakeholders. “His boots-on-ground approach showed rare leadership and sincerity. Our women are sleeping easier, and our youths feel that the government finally hears their cries,” the group stated.
The organisation also interpreted the development as a sign of President Bola Tinubu’s resolve to address insecurity in all regions of Nigeria, particularly those where previous interventions have faltered.
“Before now, many believed Benue had been abandoned. But the swift and personal response from the Army Chief, backed by the President, has shifted that perception. Our people are beginning to hope again,” Dr Paul said.
BGGN, however, urged the federal government not to treat the visit as a symbolic gesture, but to ensure follow-through with increased troop presence, improved intelligence operations, and continued engagement with local communities.
“We urge the Chief of Army Staff to ensure this marks the beginning of sustained military pressure on terror groups in Benue. The goal must be total and lasting peace,” the group noted.
BGGN pledged to support the military by mobilising youth cooperation across affected local government areas. It said it had already activated networks to facilitate communication between youth leaders and military officers on the ground.
“The youth of Benue are ready to contribute. We will help create the conditions for peace, combining local intelligence with national resolve,” the statement said.
The group further called on the federal government and relevant agencies to prepare for post-conflict recovery. “The rebuilding of schools, roads, hospitals, and homes must follow military success. True peace requires not just security but dignity and recovery,” Dr Paul said.
The organisation concluded by encouraging traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organisations to rally behind the current military-led peace initiative.
“Lieutenant General Oluyede has shown what purposeful leadership looks like. We thank him and stand ready to work alongside him to secure and rebuild Benue State,” the statement added.
