SPECIAL Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Co-ordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh (rtd), has urged traditional rulers in the Niger Delta region to call erring youths to order as destruction of oil facilities will eventually amount to self-inflicted injury if not stopped.
This was the message taken to the region during Boroh’s three-day visit to the monarchs such as the Olu of Warri, the Agadagba of Egbema Kingdom, the Amakosowei of Ogbe Ijoh, the Ovie of Uvwie, the Ebedaowei of Kabaowei, the Pere of Kabowei Kingdom and with the Regent of Gbaramatu Kingdom.
Gen. Boroh said his mission to the region is to ensure peace reigns and that grievances are settled through dialogue.
A statement from the Head of Media and Communication at the Amnesty Office, Owei Lakemfa, reported Boroh as telling the people that “a strategic thinker defends his territory against attack and destruction and not make it a battle zone”.
Boroh said his task is to make peace in the region in order to allow other agencies and strategic development partners to intervene and impact on employment and development.
The Olu of Warri, HRM Omoba Godfrey Abiloye Ikenwoli Emiko and other monarchs in their response said the Niger Delta people do not want any destruction in the region and that all the people of the region irrespective of ethnicity or religion, are one people. They said it is quite encouraging for an army general like Boroh to be working selflessly for peace and that the people of the region have no alternative than to join him in ensuring continued peace in the Niger Delta. They added that whatever grievances people have in the region should be channelled through peaceful means for resolution.
