President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extolled the virtue of the former Social Justice Advocate, Late Dr Tunji Braithwaite saying he would have been a major player in the government social contract efforts
Speaking at the the 10th memorial anniversary of the late patriarch, President Tinubu said as a promoter of social justice, Late Dr Braithwaite would have been a proper and fit partner for the current administration to mold the Nigeria of our dreams for us and our future generation.
President Tinubu who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Dr George Akume said his contributions have left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness, reminding us of the power of principled leadership and unwavering commitment to the greater good.
He said “If he was here today, he would definitely join hands with our administration to build a progressive country, because APC is a progressive platform.”
The President described him as a champion of integrity, a resilient voice for justice, and a beacon of hope for a fair and accountable society whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness, reminding us of the power of principled leadership and unwavering commitment to the greater good.
He said “As we reflect on his life and work, may we draw inspiration to continue the journey towards a just and equitable Nigeria for all. Thank you and God bless you.”
The former Chairman of the All Progressive Congress Chief Bisi Akande who was the chairman of the occasion sated that Nigeria does not lack intelligence but the missing link is the consistency of principled leadership.
He stated that leadership is not transactional, neither is it situational not does it bend with every wind.
The APC chieftain stated that the memorial lecture underscore the need the need to “Ask ourselves difficult questions including where are the leaders who will speak truth without calculation? Or leaders who will serve without seeking reward? And where are the leaders who understand that power is a trust, not an entitlement? Because the future of this country will not be determined by policies alone. It will be determined by determination.”
He stated that the life and times of Dr Tunji has shown that leadership is not about winning elections but winning the trust of history such that long after the noise of politics fades, it is that trust that endures.
He said “As we leave here today, let us not merely celebrate him. Let us emulate him. Let us commit, each in our own sphere, to a higher standard of leadership, one defined not by position, not by principles, not by power, not by purpose, not by convenience, not by courage. ”
Earlier,the Dr Omowunmi Braithwaithe, explained that the event was to “hear reflections, revisit moments from different periods of his life, and look at the ideas he stood for. The aim is simple, to bring his life back into the room between the memories of the work and the land that shaped him.”
Meanwhile, the keynote speaker Senator Ben Obi frowned at the politics practiced in the country today and the corruption in the judicial system, asserted that the judicial system has seen frivolous injunctions, saying, “if the judiciary fails the whole country collapse.”
He also said charlatans should not be allowed to come close to the corridor of power. He said the political parties are to play according to the rules, and not to use the people for their personal interest and jeopardize the nation’s democratic journey.
He lamented the level of Insecurity, and that the social contract government has with the people has been “violated”, and “sovereignty never lies with the people”, and added that Nigerians are being killed and kidnapped on daily basis.
