PRESIDENT-ELECT, General Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday applauded the Emir of Borgu, Dr Halliru Dantoro, on his positive disposition and forgiving spirit despite the fact that he was among highly placed Nigerians, who were detained between December 1983 and July 1985.

The Emir Dantoro was minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during the Shehu Shagari-led administration and was detained while the Buhari-led military government investigated the civilian government of Shagari.

Buhari, who spoke while receiving the Emir and members of his council at his campaign headquarters in Abuja, remarked that the Emir was in the mould of those who held no grudge against the action taken by the administration at the time.

The president-elect said the Emir, who has a rich knowledge of history and culture, had been able to put aside the past to establish very strong and cherished personal relationship with him over the years.

The President-elect said that, as Commander-in-Chief in a military dispensation, responsibility for all actions of government, a reality he accepted. He described the Emir ‘s detention as one of those.

Recalling how personalities, like the former finance Minister, Malam Adamu Ciroma, and the late Bilyaminu Usman, faced similar fate as that of the Emir, Buhari said he accepted the goodwill of all such past leaders, who did not hold him personally responsible for the actions of the military government.

Thanking him and his people for enduring the seven-hour journey from Borgu to Abuja to congratulate him, Buhari promised the nation that, as an elected president, he would ensure equity, fairness and justice for all.

Buhari used the occasion to, once again, greet Nigerians on the occasion of the Easter.

The Emir, in an earlier remark, had said that Buhari’s second coming was a God-sent to redeem and reunite the nation. He pledged the total support of his people to the success of the in-coming administration.
