Buhari nominates 46 as ambassadors

• Mamora, Ibeto, Tallen, Emenike, Asuquo make list
• FCT protests against non-inclusion
• No nominee yet for Imo

President Muhammadu Buhari has forwarded the names of 46 nominees as non-career ambassadors from 35 states to the Senate for confirmation. A letter addressed to the Senate President Bukola Saraki, which was read on the floor of the upper chamber yesterday revealed that former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olorunimbe Mamora, former Plateau State Deputy Governor Pauline Tallen and erstwhile Deputy Governor Mohammed Ibeto of Niger State are among the nominees.

Also nominated are: former Supreme Court Justice, George Adesola Oguntade (Lagos); Mrs. Modupe Irele (Lagos); Dr. Uzoma Emenike (Abia); Dr. Clifford Zirra (Adamawa); Maj. Gen. Godwin G. Umo (rtd) (Akwa Ibom); Christopher J.N. Okeke (Anambra); Yusuf Tuggar (Bauchi); Baba Madugu (Bauchi); Brig. Gen. Stanley Diriyai (Bayelsa); Dr. Enyantu Ifenne (Benue); Mohammed Hayatuddeen (Borno) and Dr. Etubom N.E. Asuquo (Cross River).

Others are: Francis Efeduma (Delta); Mr. Jonah M. Odo (Ebonyi); Uyagwe Igbe (Edo); Ayodele Ayodeji (Ekiti); Maj. Gen. Chris Eze (Enugu); Alhaji Suleiman Hassan (Gombe); Amin Muhammad Dalhatu (Jigawa); Muhammad Yaro (Kaduna); Deborah Iliya (Kaduna); Prof. D. Abduikadir (Kano); Alhaji Haruna Ungogo (Kano); Justice lsa Dodo (Katsina); Dr. Usman Bugaje (Katsina); Prof. Tijjani Bande (Kebbi); Prof. Y. O. Aliu (Kogi); Nuruddeen Mohamed (Kwara); and Prof. Mohamed G. Yisa (Kwara).

Also on the list are Musa Ilu Muhammad (Nasarawa), Mr. Ade Asekun (Ogun), Sola Iji (Ondo); Adegboyega A. Ogunwusi (Osun); Major Gen. Ashimiyu A. Olaniyi (rtd ) (Osun); Dr. Haruna Bawa Abdulahi (Plateau); and Orji Ngofa (Rivers).

The rest are Justice Sylvanus Adiewere Nsofor (Rivers), Jamila Ahmadu-Suka (Sokoto), Kabiru Umar (Sokoto), Alhaji Mustapha Jaji (Taraba), Goni Modu Zanna Bura (Yobe), Alhaji Garba Gajam (Zamfara) and Cpt. Abdulahi Uba Garbasi (Zamfara).

However, the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Philip Aduda, has raised a point of order challenging Buhari for not including in the list of non-career ambassadors.

Aduda referred the Senate to Section 299 of the 1999 Constitution that states that “FCT shall be treated as if it is one of the states in Nigeria and that the president is the governor of the territory with the executive ministers of the federation serving as commissioners of the FCT while the National Assembly shall serve as the state House of Assembly for FCT.”

Saraki noted the point of order by the senator and promised to communicate back to the executive for correction.Lagos State has the highest number of nominees (three), while Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kwara, Bauchi, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Zamfara have two nominees each. Other states have one each. Imo State is yet to be represented.
