Building bridges across borders: Uche Okugo’s vision for a more inclusive Canada

Uche is a dynamic social entrepreneur whose passion for fostering diversity and inclusion has made him a prominent figure in Canada’s multicultural landscape. As the Founder and President of the Network of Nigerians in Canada (NNC), a non-profit organization now celebrating its fifth year, Uche has spearheaded numerous programs aimed at leveraging Canada’s rich multiculturalism. Through activities that enhance economic and leadership capacities, the NNC has become a vital platform for community growth and empowerment.

Uche’s commitment to his community is reflected in his many pioneering achievements. Notably, he played an instrumental role in securing a Proclamation by the City of Brampton, recognizing June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, and orchestrated a flag-raising ceremony at Queen’s Park to commemorate Nigeria’s Independence Day.

Beyond his work with NNC, Uche serves on the Brampton Mayor’s Black Advisory Council and has held leadership roles as the past President of both the City of Brampton Toastmasters Club and the Rotary Club of Brampton. Looking ahead, Uche will lead Rotary District 7080 in 2026 as its District Governor, overseeing 45 Rotary clubs and 1,500 members across the Greater Toronto Area.

Recently, Uche joined the Board of Directors for the William Osler Health System Foundation, where he is contributing to transformative projects such as building Brampton’s second hospital and a Cancer Dialysis Center for Brampton Civic Hospital.

His impressive academic credentials further underscore his drive for excellence. With a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, a Master’s in Business Administration, and certificates in leadership, strategy, financial trading, and economic development, Uche’s expertise spans multiple disciplines. He is also a recipient of the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) 100 Most Influential People in Export and Trade and the Preponderant Top 25 People Shaping Canada-Africa Relations.

Currently, Uche works at the Economic Development Office of the City of Brampton, where he leads the groundbreaking Investment Attraction desk for Africa and the Caribbean. In this role, he has built strong partnerships with organizations and government representatives from the African Union (AU) and CARICOM, ensuring meaningful and sustainable economic connections.

Reflecting on his journey, Uche says:
“Canada’s strength lies in its diversity. Through collaboration and meaningful engagement, we can create opportunities that empower individuals and uplift communities. I’m honored to contribute to this vision and build bridges that connect cultures, inspire innovation, and drive progress.”

Uche is married to Peace, lovingly known as “Mother of Nations,” and together they have a son, Samuel, fondly called “First of Nations.” Uche also serves the Anglican Church as an Evangelist, extending his passion for leadership and service into his faith community.

Uche’s dedication and influence continue to resonate far beyond the Nigerian-Canadian community, embodying the power of leadership, inclusion, and the spirit of giving back.
