The Office of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for Taraba state, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha has alleged that a recent invitation extended to the senator by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is politically motivated, describing it as part of what it called a broader pattern of intimidation against opposition figures in Taraba state.
In a statement issued on behalf of the senator by his Special Assistant on Media, Joshua Yohanna Nafinji, the office said it respects the constitutional mandate of the EFCC and other law enforcement agencies but expressed concern over the timing and circumstances surrounding the invitation.
The statement argued that the development reflects what it described as the increasing use of state institutions to target political opponents.
It cited previous cases involving former Minister of Transportation Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, former Minister of Power Sale Mamman, Bello Bodejo, and Muktar Kawujo, claiming that each experienced circumstances widely perceived by supporters as politically motivated during electoral contests in the state.
According to the statement, these incidents have contributed to growing public concerns over the possible misuse of state institutions for partisan political purposes. It warned that such perceptions, if left unaddressed, could undermine democratic governance, the rule of law, and public confidence in independent institutions.
The Bwacha media office also urged the Taraba state government to ensure that democracy is strengthened through fairness, transparency, tolerance, and healthy political competition, rather than actions that could create the impression of political interference in public institutions.
It further called on civil society organisations, democratic institutions, the media, and Nigerians to remain vigilant in defending democratic principles and the rule of law.
The statement maintained that Senator Bwacha remains law abiding and committed to serving the people of Taraba State, insisting that no form of intimidation would deter him from pursuing what it described as justice, good governance, and democratic accountability.
