CAN urges support for measles, rubella vaccination campaign

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches, parents, and communities across the country to support the Federal Government’s ongoing measles-rubella vaccination campaign by ensuring that all eligible children are vaccinated.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, made the appeal on Monday in Abuja at the flag-off of the Nationwide Integrated Measles-Rubella Vaccine Campaign, describing the initiative as a bold and transformative step toward protecting Nigerian children from preventable diseases.

He said the integration of the measles-rubella vaccine into the national immunization schedule represents a major milestone in Nigeria’s public health advancement and underscores the government’s renewed commitment to safeguarding every child.

Okoh commended the Federal Government’s efforts to reduce child mortality and strengthen the healthcare system, noting that the well-being of citizens remains central to national development.

“A healthy population is the foundation for productivity, innovation, and peace. This campaign, which integrates measles-rubella, polio, anti-malaria, and neglected tropical diseases interventions, demonstrates the seriousness and commitment of the government and its partners to protecting the health and future of our children and communities,” he said.

He recalled that CAN had earlier pledged its support for the vaccination drive during a meeting with the C-WINS and Measles-Rubella Coalition and had since mobilized its five blocs in readiness for the rollout.

“We call on all parents, caregivers, and communities to take full advantage of this opportunity by ensuring every child is vaccinated and protected. We also encourage our churches nationwide to actively support awareness and mobilisation efforts,” Okoh added.

The CAN President also commended Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her advocacy and leadership in championing the vaccination campaign, expressing optimism that the initiative would help build a healthier, stronger, and more prosperous Nigeria.
