ChatGPT restored after global outage
OpenAI’s widely-used AI chatbot, ChatGPT, experienced a global outage lasting about three hours, with 74% of users reporting errors, according to Downdetector.
The company has since resolved the issue, stating, “API, ChatGPT, and Sora traffic has largely recovered. We are monitoring the situation to ensure full resolution.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the recovery, tweeting, “We back,” and humorously adding, “I was about to offer to start being the mechanical turk for ChatGPT.” Frustrated users replied, noting the downtime lasted three hours.
The outage also impacted OpenAI’s text-to-video AI platform, Sora, which has now largely recovered as well.
This disruption follows a smaller outage last month, where ChatGPT was unavailable for 30 minutes for over 19,000 users worldwide.
The incident occurred shortly after a widespread outage hit Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads. Meta has since restored most of its services, apologising for the inconvenience caused.
Meta’s platforms share technical architecture, making simultaneous outages possible, though the company has clarified its plan to keep apps interoperable has been shelved due to regulatory scrutiny.
