The Centre for Human Rights and Justice (CHRJ) has urged serving police officers to stay focused and dedicated to their duties and to trust in the ongoing reforms led by the Egbetokun-led leadership.
This was announced in a statement on Friday by the CHRJ, praising the National Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria for their display of patriotism and leadership following their recent visit to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The CHRJ commended NARPON’s confidence in the IGP’s leadership, especially in tackling issues related to salaries, pensions, and the welfare of both active and retired police officers.
According to the centre, NARPON’s approach, based on dialogue and strategic engagement, is admirable and demonstrates mature leadership.
The CHRJ noted that the visit has exposed the futility of efforts by some individuals, including Mr. Omoyele Sowore, to mobilise police officers for a politically motivated protest.
Such efforts were described as “a theatrical engagement with ghost policemen,” with the Centre emphasising that genuine serving or retired officers are not willing to be associated with the campaign.
The Centre stressed that with the renewed synergy between the Force leadership and the Association of Retired Police Officers, there is a clearer path to achieving long-standing demands for improved service and welfare conditions.
“We encourage all police personnel, whether serving or retired, to shun distractions and remain supportive of the current leadership. The progress being made is real, and the partnership with retired officers is a strong confirmation that sustainable change is underway,” the statement concluded.
