Supreme Head of the Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria, Prophet Solomon Adegboyega Alao, has lauded political leaders for their respect for the rule of law during the legal battle that followed the outcome of this year’s presidential election.
He pointed out that if politicians of the First Republic had followed suit, there would not have been any reason for the military coup of January 15, 1966 that terminated civil rule at the time.
While congratulating President Bola Tinubu on confirmation of his mandate by the Supreme Court, the cleric advised him to be magnanimous in victory for the development of the country.
Alao also declared the presidential candidates of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, as “Champions of Democracy” for allowing peace to reign.
He said: “Nigerians should appreciate both Atiku and Obi for their peaceful disposition and respect for the rule of law. We knew what happened in 1966 and 1983 that truncated democracy in Nigeria, but they behaved wiser than politicians of those periods. I hope President (Bola) Tinubu will also respect them for this.”
He counselled them not to abandon their quest for good governance, urging the duo to keep putting government on its toes by providing alternative policies and constructive criticism to shape programmes and improve welfare of the citizens.
The clergyman said now that the issue of election has been put to rest, all Nigerians irrespective of their political affiliation should rally around President Tinubu to concentrate on governance, noting that his priority should include reforming the country, establishing of state and regional police, devolution of more power to the state security, economy, the welfare of Nigerians, and massive development of infrastructure.
