Cloudburst: Ogun govt urges calm as lightning kills 32 cows

Ogun State Government has urged residents of the state to remain calm and follow all advice to mitigate the ongoing flash floods in parts of the state, describing them as a natural phenomenon

Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Ola Oresanya, yesterday, said the assurance became necessary to stop the residents from all panicky measures, as well as to remind them of the advice they must heed, which are aimed at safeguarding life and property during this rainy season when predictable flash floods are prevalent.

Oresanya urged residents to stay indoors when it’s raining or stay in a safe place when on transit.

“Motorists and commuters are also advised to avoid the temptation of crossing flood paths until the flood recedes, which is usually within one or two hours.

“Households and community leaders are equally advised to ensure that all constrictions along drainage channels and canals are removed,” he said.

The commissioner, while warning residents of the state to expect more torrential rain in the next three weeks, which is the first peak of the raining season, stressed the need for residents to contact the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Flood Emergency Management response teams at the nearest local council to them in case of any emergency.

The Community Development Associations (CDAs), he added, had also been mobilised as first responders for flood emergency management within their communities.

HOWEVER, no fewer than 32 cows have been struck dead by lightning, at the weekend, during a torrential downpour in Osara, a village in the Obantoko area of Abeokuta, located in Odeda Local Council of Ogun State.

The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m., prompting alarm among local Fulani herders, who quickly alerted community leader, Baale Wasiu Afolabi.

Afolabi, while speaking with journalists, yesterday, confirmed that the animals were discovered lifeless at the herders’ grazing station where they were kept during the storm.

“We’ve since reported the matter to Aregbe Police Division and the Chairman of Odeda Local Council, Dr Afolashade Adeyemo,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Lanre Ogunlowo, told journalists that the incident was reported to the Divisional Police Officer of Aregbe Division at around 1:30 p.m. on June 21, 2025.

Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.

“32 cows were struck dead when thunder and lightning occurred during a heavy downpour,” Ogunlowo stated.
