Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called for independent probe of the alleged missing 149 million barrels of crude oil, noting that as Minister of Petroleum Resources since 2015, President Muhammad Buhari could not investigate himself.

Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called for independent probe of the alleged missing 149 million barrels of crude oil, noting that as Minister of Petroleum Resources since 2015, President Muhammad Buhari could not investigate himself.

The appeal comes on the heels of public outcry for investigation of reported loss of over $2.4 billion in revenue from alleged illegal sale of 48 million barrels of oil export in 2015 and similar advocacy by Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) for a presidential panel of enquiry to unravel the allegations documented in the 2019 reports of the Auditor General of the Federation and Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

CNPP said any investigation on the matter by the current administration would be meaningless, owing to vested interest.

In a statement, the Secretary General, Willy Ezugwu, said: “It will be futile for any citizen or member of the civil society community to get Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) management team to account for their stewardship or be held accountable for their alleged financial and economic crime under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration or any All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled government.

“Recall that CNPP, as the umbrella body of all registered political parties and political associations, had expressed worries that while oil-producing countries globally were experiencing a boost in revenue generation as a result of increasing international prices of crude oil, Nigeria continues to suffer decline in earnings. It had in 2022 reiterated its earlier call for sack of the management team of the newly registered NNPCL and urged President Buhari to replace them with prudent private sector players to save the economy.”
