THE Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in Enugu has destroyed and seized broadcast equipment valued at over N3.3million used in illegal transmission of Multichoice signals.
The items, which include boosters, signal amplifiers, cables /wires among others used for the illegal connection and distribution were destroyed and seized from various locations in the state.
The Zonal Manager of NCC, Mrs. Ngozi Okeke, told reporters in Enugu that a team of Copyright Inspectors led by Mr. Akachukwu Macfoy, 10 armed mobile policemen and eight supporting staff were involved in the exercise that took them to various parts of the state including Uwani and Achara layout areas.
Lamenting the rate at which certain persons in the society engage in illegal distribution of broadcast signals, she said that the Commission would not relent in arresting and prosecuting anyone caught.
Okeke said though no arrests were made, the inspectors would keep a tab on some of the areas visited, stressing that those who engaged in the business were ripping off the society.
She restated that it was a crime for anybody to engage in rebroadcasting signals of another for commercial purposes without approval of the commission.
She reiterated the appeal of the Director-General of the Commission, Dr. Afam Ezekude to all good spirited Nigerians to join in the fight against piracy and promised that the exercise would continue until pirates were chased out of business.
