The Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Akinpelu Johnson, has commenced the construction of a new legislative complex aimed at enhancing the efficiency, responsiveness and accountability of governance at the grassroots level.
Speaking during the foundation-laying ceremony held yesterday at the Alimosho Local Government Secretariat, Johnson described the project as a strategic investment in democratic institutions and a critical step towards creating a more effective legislative arm of government.
The chairman assured that the project, which is expected to be completed within six months, would provide improved office accommodation and modern facilities for councillors and legislative officers, thereby strengthening the council’s capacity to deliver quality services to residents.
According to him, the initiative was part of the administration’s commitment to deepening democratic governance and promoting transparency and accountability in local administration.
He said: “This occasion is not merely about the construction of a physical structure. It is about strengthening democratic institutions, deepening good governance and creating an enabling environment for effective legislative functions within our local government.”
Johnson expressed that councillors play a leading role in lawmaking, oversight and representation, stressing that the legislative arm must be adequately equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities effectively.
He pointed out that the new legislative building would address the longstanding challenge of inadequate office accommodation that had constrained the operations of the council’s legislature over the years.
He added that relocating councillors and legislative staff to the new facility upon completion would create additional office space within the existing secretariat for administrative personnel, thereby improving overall operational efficiency.
Earlier in his remarks, the Head of Administration, Mr. Lawal Rafiu, commended the chairman for approving the construction of the legislative complex.
Rafiu said the project represented an investment in institutional development and demonstrated the administration’s recognition of the vital role of the legislature in grassroots governance.
Providing details of the project, the Head of Department of Works, Oladapo Oluwaseyi, stated that the building would occupy a land area of 201.25 square metres and consist of three floors.
He explained that the upper floor would accommodate the legislative chamber as well as the offices of the Clerk and the Leader of the House, while the middle floor would contain offices for councillors.
The ground floor, he added, would house other essential offices required for legislative operations.
He emphasised that the contractor handling the project had been given six months date to deliver the facility.
In separate goodwill messages, the Executive Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lukman Agbaje, and the Chairman of Mosan-Okunola LCDA, Princess Akindele Opeyemi, lauded Johnson for prioritising institutional development through the provision of a dedicated legislative facility.
Also speaking, the Onishasha of Shasha Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Nasiru Babatunde Ogunronbi, commended the local government chairman for his responsiveness to the needs and aspirations of residents.
In his vote of thanks, the Leader of the House, Semiu Olamilekan, expressed gratitude to the chairman for initiating the project during his tenure.
The event culminated in the formal laying of the foundation stone by the chairman, assisted by top council officials and other dignitaries.
