Corruption: Submit to court, group urges Yahaya Bello

A leading anti-corruption and transparency group, Vanguard for Credible Representation (VCR), has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its renewed commitment to the fight against corruption in the country.

According to VCR, the recent arrest and investigation into allegations against the former governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku, along with the filing of fresh charges against the embattled former Kogi governor, Yahaya Bello, and other sundry investigations, suggest the commission is regaining its mandate position.

VCR called on Yahaya Bello to obey the court summons and make himself available to take his plea regarding the 19-count corruption charges filed against him by the EFCC.

According to a statement by its Head of Mission, Onche Ugbabe, on Thursday, the group noted that the EFCC has once again proven it is determined to carry out its mandate without fear or favour.

Describing the commission’s current commitment and the contributions of well-meaning Nigerians as commendable, Ugbabe noted that the EFCC is surely making remarkable progress in the fight against corruption.

The statement read: “We are happy to commend the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for its recent vigour in carrying out its anti-corruption mandate. The recent efforts will not only pave the way for more collaborations and support but will also enhance the image of the commission.

“These efforts are inspiring but must be extended far and wide to address corrupt practices comprehensively in order to make it a remarkable success in the end.

“We again ask the former governor of Kogi, Yahaya Bello, to submit himself to the Commission and keep his date at the law court. The commission should also focus on the oil and other sectors as it is doing with the states.”

The group restated its promise to support the efforts of Federal and state governments, the EFCC, the ICPC, the NFIU, all security agencies, and anti-corruption agencies in their mission to bring about a new and prosperous Nigeria.
