Vice Chancellor of Rivers State University, Prof. Nlerum Okogbule has said the ‘No School Fees, No Examination” policy recently introduced by the school is paying off.

Students of the institution had, two months ago, protested against the policy, citing harsh economic situations in the country; but the school management maintained its grounds, forcing some councils to come to the rescue of their students while some individuals also assisted.

Speaking, yesterday, in Port Harcourt ahead of its 34th convocation ceremony billed for Friday and Saturday, where 56 persons will bag First Class from the 4,982 graduands, the vice chancellor explained that the institution was in a very sad situation as some students failed to pay fees and were not issued matriculation numbers.

He said: “From this exercise, over 3,000 students, who would not have paid their fees have done so now. Three councils eventually came to the rescue of some students from their areas.”
Giving a breakdown of the graduands, Okogbule noted that 3,314 would bag Bachelor’s degrees, while 1,668 would bag postgraduate degrees, bringing the total number to 4,982.

He also said the high point of the convocation ceremony would be the award of Honorary Degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D) to Governor Nyesom Wike and the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the University, Justice Iche Ndu.

He disclosed that the convocation lecture would be delivered by former Vice Chancellor of University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Joseph Ajienka, on the topic , “Nigeria Universities and Leadership Value Proposition: Having graduates worthy in character and learning.”
