Court plays video of Nnamdi Kanu’s DSS interrogation, reads 2015 statement

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday played video recordings of its interrogation of Nnamdi Kanu at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court session also featured the reading of a voluntary statement Kanu made on October 15, 2015, in which he admitted to establishing Radio Biafra in London, where it was duly registered.

However, he said the station was not registered with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Nigeria, asserting there was no need for such registration.

Kanu told interrogators that his mission was to fight for the emancipation of the people of the South East, South South, and parts of Benue and Kogi States.

He described his activities as legitimate freedom fighting, not criminality.

“Freedom fighting is not a crime in any part of the world, including Nigeria, because it is a fundamental right,” he declared, according to the statement read in court. He further stated that he had never been involved in violence nor linked to any violent acts.

The prosecution also presented items recovered from Kanu’s hotel room in 2015, displayed in open court. The items, contained in four suitcases, were tendered as evidence.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), did not object to the admissibility of the items, which were admitted as exhibits by trial judge, Justice James Omotosho.
