Court sentences man to 14 years in jail for sexual assault
A man, Niyi Oyerogbe, has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for attempting to assault a 12-year-old girl sexually. Oyerogbe was found guilty of the offence by Justice Rahman Oshodi of a Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court.
The court heard that Oyerogbe had attempted to sexually assault the girl on February 23, 2018, at No. 49, Ishiba Oluwo Street, Egbeda, Lagos. He was initially charged with defilement of a child but pleaded not guilty. However, he later approached the prosecution for a plea bargain and was re-arraigned on an amended charge of attempt to commit sexual assault by penetration.
Oyerogbe pleaded guilty to the lesser offence and was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. Justice Oshodi said that the sentence was appropriate given the seriousness of the offence.
“The maximum sentence prescribed under Section 262 of the Criminal Law for this offence is 14 years imprisonment. This reflects the legislature’s view of the seriousness of this crime,” he said.Oyerogbe’s name will also be registered as a sex offender.
