Cross River Assembly extends LG boss suspension by 90 days

The Cross River State House of Assembly has prolonged the suspension of Bekwara Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Theresa Ushie, by another 90 days.

The decision, announced by Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem during plenary, followed a motion seeking to extend the tenure of the Acting Chairman, Hon. Egbung Odama.

Ayambem explained that the extension was necessary to give the House Committee on Judiciary, Public Service Matters, Public Petitions, and Conflict Resolution more time to investigate allegations leveled against Ushie by the Bekwara Legislative Council.

Ushie, who was elected and sworn in as Bekwara Council Chairman in November 2024, was first suspended on June 10, 2025, after the Assembly deliberated on a petition submitted by her council’s legislators.

The petition accused her of gross misconduct, prompting lawmakers to mandate a probe by the relevant committee.

Chairman of the Committee, Rt. Hon. Davies Etta, Deputy Leader of the 10th Assembly and member representing Abi State Constituency, noted that additional time was required to ensure a comprehensive investigation.

With the extension, Hon. Egbung Odama will continue in acting capacity pending the outcome of the probe.
