It is an alarming experience for students of Government Secondary School Bachirawa, Ungogo LGA in Kano State, who learn in an environment without basic learning facilities.
The school’s classrooms lack windows, furniture, and doors. The walls are cracked, and students sit under exposed ceilings.
A civil society organisation (CSO), MonITNG, described the state of the school as horrible, unacceptable, shameful, and a betrayal of the students’ right to quality education.
MonITNG noted that billions of naira have been allocated to the Kano State educational sector and questioned why students of Government Secondary School Bachirawa still learn under such appalling conditions.
“What’s more painful is that this is happening despite billions of naira budgeted for education by both the previous and current administrations.
“Over the years, Kano State has also received international support from development partners like UNICEF, the World Bank, the UK’s FCDO (formerly DFID), and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE)—all aimed at improving access to and quality of basic education,” MonITNG noted.
It also questioned why the investments targeted at improving the educational sector do not reach schools like Government Secondary School Bachirawa, which need them most.
The CSO also appealed to the Kano State Government, the Ministry of Education, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and other relevant authorities to intervene.
“The children of Bachirawa deserve better. Every child in Kano deserves better. This is not just about a classroom. It’s about the future of thousands of children who are being left behind in silence. Let this image be a wake-up call. Enough is enough.”
