…Jimoh Ibrahim and Kayode bring proven global outreach and diplomatic expertise to the table
…Predict stronger Nigeria-US ties, greater influence at the United Nations
A coalition of accredited civil society and community-based organisations has applauded President Bola Tinubu for appointing what it described as “men of honour with proven global outreach and diplomatic understanding” to lead Nigeria’s strategic diplomatic missions in the United Nations and the United States.
The Civil Society Organisation on Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI) said the appointments of Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador Kayode Are as Ambassador to the United States reflected merit, competence and a clear commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s voice on the global stage.
In a statement signed by its Director-General, Kunle Yusuff, the organisation said President Tinubu had demonstrated sound judgment by placing “round pegs in round holes,” expressing confidence that the appointments would yield significant diplomatic, economic and security benefits for the country.
“The appointment of these distinguished Nigerians represents one of the most significant positive developments for Nigeria at this time. They are men of honour with proven global outreach and diplomatic understanding, well equipped to advance Nigeria’s national interests,” the statement said.
According to CSCHEI, renewed confidence from international partners, development institutions and the United Nations system shows that Nigeria is regaining its standing and credibility in global affairs.
The group said Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim has already made an impact since assuming office on April 20, restoring Nigeria’s full diplomatic representation at the United Nations after a two-year vacancy.
It particularly commended his election as Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, which oversees the organisation’s budget, administration and human resources, describing the development as evidence of growing international confidence in Nigeria’s leadership.
CSCHEI also noted that Ambassador Ibrahim had continued to champion Nigeria’s call for a permanent African seat on the United Nations Security Council while vigorously promoting President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda before the international community.
On Ambassador Kayode Are, who assumed office in Washington on May 21, the organisation said his extensive experience as former Director-General of the Department of State Services and former National Security Adviser had positioned him to strengthen strategic cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
It noted that his presentation of letters of credence to US President Donald Trump formally restored Nigeria’s ambassadorial representation in Washington after a two-year vacancy.
The group further said Ambassador Are had already deepened engagement with American institutions, enhanced cooperation on security and intelligence matters, and was helping to address investor concerns aimed at attracting greater foreign direct investment into Nigeria.
CSCHEI expressed optimism that with Ambassador Ibrahim occupying a key leadership position within the United Nations and Ambassador Are providing Nigeria with direct access to the highest levels of the US government, the country stands to benefit from stronger bilateral relations, expanded development partnerships and increased international influence.
The organisation reaffirmed its commendation of President Tinubu for appointing “round pegs in round holes,” saying the choice of experienced and respected diplomats would further advance Nigeria’s foreign policy and development objectives.
