Cult clash claims three lives in Niger Delta University

Three persons, suspected to be students, have been confirmed dead at the Niger Delta University, following a renewed cult war in the university.

They are believed to be students of the Engineering and English departments of the university, located in Amasoma, Southern Ijaw local council area.

Though the incident occurred outside the campus of the institution, but the information caused pandemonium among students at the university, especially when the gruesome picture of one of the victims was circulated in the social media.

One of the deceased students was identified as a 400-level student of the Faculty of Engineering, while the other two could not be immediately ascertained.

The 400-level student was brutally butchered with machete, which left his arm severed. The other two were discovered in the community river, behind the school in the pool of their blood, after they had been butchered.

Though many of the students kept mum over the incident, investigations however, revealed that the victims were killed over cult-related rivalry.

Spokesman of the state police‎ command, Asimin Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said he is yet to get signals from the Ammassoma Division of the command.

However, Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Demo Alagoa, told our correspondent that he was not available and could not confirm the identity of the deceased students.

Meanwhile, a coalition of Human Rights Advocacy groups, made up of the Zonal Human Rights Initiative (ZUHURAI) and the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), have expressed concern over the recent cases of violence in the university community, including the recent failed attempt to bomb a bank in Bayelsa.

According to the statement issued in Yenagoa at the weekend, National Coordinator of ZUHURI, Comrade Eris Erik Umoru Gbasa, accused the traditional institution and community leadership, of failing in their duties to give purposeful leadership.
