Customs seize 264 smuggled items worth N2.9b in Northern region

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’ of the Nigeria Customs Service in Kaduna has made a total of 242 seizures of 21 different items worth N2.9 billion at different locations in the North-Central and Northwest zones.

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’ of the Nigeria Customs Service in Kaduna has made a total of 242 seizures of 21 different items worth N2.9 billion at different locations in the North-Central and Northwest zones. The unit said seizures were made possible through intelligence reports and improved strategies to raise the service’s operational performances.

 
The Controller of the Customs anti-smuggling unit, Dalha Chedi, who disclosed this in a statement obtained by The Guardian, raised the alarm that smugglers have perfected new methods to evade arrest by hiring bandits in the northern region to smuggle contraband products into the country through additional illegal routes.
 
He listed items seized from October till date to include 61 smuggled sports utility vehicles worth N 2.1million; 16 Cartons of foreign hookah (Tobacco) worth N4.5 million; 2, 991 bags of 50 kilogramme of foreign parboiled rice worth N202 million; 292 foreign refined Vegetable Oils (25litres each) worth N17.9 million; 337 cartons of foreign cigarettes worth N80.3 million.
 
Others are 2,131 cartons of spaghetti, macaroni and couscous worth N17.9 million; 640 bales of foreign secondhand clothing worth N137.5 million; 147 sacks of foreign secondhand shoes worth N21.9 million; 360 cartons of frozen poultry products worth N20.3 million; 120 cartons of foreign pomade worth N8.9 million; 98 pieces of foreign jack knives worth N1.2 million; 870 pieces foreign machetes worth N7.6 million; 212 cartons of foreign milky creamer worth N5.5 million and 76 bags of ammonium sulphate (25Kg each) worth N15.7 million.

Chedi said other items seized also include, 34 cartons of foreign condensed milk worth N3.8 million; 1,972 jerry cans of PMS (25 litres each) worth N22.9 million; 78 cartons of foreign medicaments worth N3.6 million; 76 cartons of expired seasoning worth N4.7 million; 25 bags of foreign parboiled rice (25Kg each) worth N994, 815; 20 bundles of foreign used tyres worth N917, 978.40; 10 bags of foreign flour worth N695, 614 and 18 means of conveyance worth N236.4 million.
