Customs seizes N81.5m smuggled goods in Adamawa
Operation Whirlwind of the Nigeria Customs Service has made a significant breakthrough in Adamawa State, confiscating smuggled goods worth over N81.5 million.
Speaking to journalists in Yola, the operation’s National Coordinator, Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, detailed the latest seizures, which included 71,965 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) smuggled in jerry cans, drums, and fuel tankers. Five vehicles, two motorcycles, and assorted fuel containers were also seized, reportedly intended for illegal export to the Republic of Cameroon.
“Since our last briefing on October 9, 2024, the team has achieved significant success in curbing smuggling activities, with total seizures valued at N81,517,570,” Ejibunu said.
He disclosed that the task force had intercepted 14 fuel tankers, handing over 13 to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in Adamawa and one in Taraba for further inter-agency action. A suspect linked to the smuggling activities is currently facing prosecution.
Ejibunu highlighted the operation’s positive impact on the local fuel market, citing improved availability of PMS, reduced scarcity, and stabilised prices in Adamawa State. He assured that the seized fuel would be auctioned promptly, with proceeds remitted to the federation account in line with the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
He further encouraged legitimate oil marketers to continue their business without fear, emphasising that the operation is targeted solely at illegal operators and economic saboteurs.
“To the press, we deeply appreciate your invaluable contributions and encourage your continued advocacy against smuggling,” Ejibunu added.
