CWFI plans convention to help women navigate tax laws

Tax laws

The Christian Women Fellowship International (CWFI) has insisted that the new tax law was not properly communicated, noting that such initiatives require detailed advocacy to secure strong public engagement and commitment.

This concern was expressed by the President of the Christian Women International Church of God Mission International, Lagos Bishopric, Rev. (Mrs) Helen Fianu, at a media briefing yesterday, to herald the CWFI 2026 convention, focusing on topical national issues, including the new tax law.

The convention, themed “Women of Impact,” which is expected to host over 400 participants, is scheduled to run from Thursday, March 26, to Sunday, March 29, 2026.

Fianu noted that while the tax laws impact every working adult, whether in formal employment or self-employment, current frameworks overlook gender considerations and do not actively support women in business or women in paid employment.

To ensure women are well-informed, she said that the convention has been specifically organised to help women understand the implications of the new tax law, adding that a lecture titled “New Tax Law – How It Affects Every Nigerian Woman,” will be delivered by the Director, Financial Services Department, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr Odunayo Ani, while a seasoned Gynaecologist, Dr Osadolor, will educate women on “management of menopause,’ among others.

She, however, emphasised that women need to understand not only what the tax laws entail, but also the privileges and benefits available to them as business owners or employees.

“Whether you are in paid employment or not, once you are working, you have to pay your taxes, and ignorance is not an excuse in law,” she added.

Fianu also advised women to be a woman of impact by aligning their faith with actions to leave an indelible mark in history.

She, therefore, encouraged them to draw inspiration from biblical figures, saying: “From Esther’s courage in the face of adversity to Mary’s unwavering belief in God’s promise, each story encapsulates the essence of what it means to be a woman of impact.”

She stressed that the essence of the faith-based non-governmental organisation is to help women, as well as the younger generation of both men and women, understand their calling and develop their God-given potential.
