The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has described former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, as a moral compass in global public discourse and an elder statesman who led Nigeria with patriotism and commitment.
Former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has today attained the age of 84.
The former President of the Senate also mourned the passing of the Emir of Zuru, His Royal Highness, General Sani Sami (Rtd.), describing him as a gallant soldier, patriot, and a traditional ruler of honour.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Mr. Paul Mumeh, in Abuja on Sunday, the ADC National Chairman, in his tribute to General Babangida, further described him as a patriot who believes firmly in the sanctity of one united and indivisible Nigeria.
According to him: “Today is not merely to mark the passage of time, but to celebrate the extraordinary life of a soldier, a patriot, and a statesman who, at 84, stands as a living monument to courage, service, and honour.
“From the day he first donned the nation’s uniform, General Babangida embodied the creed of duty before self.”
He noted that Babangida’s career was marked by discipline and distinction that spanned decades of national service; defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, safeguarding her unity, and mentoring generations of officers who went on to lead with the same integrity he exemplified.
The statement continued: “The former Senate President recalled Babangida’s stewardship during his years of service. In the barracks and on the battlefield, he was resolute. In the corridors of policy and leadership, he was wise. His voice carried the weight of experience, yet it was always tempered with humility.”
Mark further remarked that those privileged to serve under Babangida remember not only his tactical brilliance but also his humanity as a leader who could command with firmness yet inspire with compassion.
“Even in retirement, General Babangida has never withdrawn from service to the nation. Instead, he has remained a moral compass in public discourse and an elder statesman whose counsel is sought across political divides.
“His patriotism was never about the uniform alone, but about a lifelong commitment to the ideals for which he once risked everything. At 84, his medals may have faded in shine, but his legacy gleams brighter than ever,” Mark stated.
In another development, the ADC National Chairman expressed sadness over the demise of General Sami, whom he described as a patriot and whose valuable contributions to Nigeria would be missed.
He said the late traditional ruler was a patriot and a father figure.
In his condolence message, Senator Mark said General Sami lived an exemplary life of courage, discipline, and sacrifice, both in military service and on the throne of his forefathers.
Mark added: “General Sani Sami served Nigeria with distinction as a fine officer of the Nigerian Army and later as Emir of Zuru, where he upheld the values of peace, unity, and development for his people.
“He was a bridge-builder and a custodian of culture whose reign brought stability and progress to the Zuru Emirate.
“His voice of wisdom and moderation will be greatly missed.”
Senator Mark noted that the passing of General Sami is a huge loss not only to the Zuru Emirate and Kebbi State, but also to the nation at large.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Emir, the Zuru Emirate Council, the Government and people of Kebbi State, as well as the Nigerian Army family, praying God to grant the deceased eternal rest and give his loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
