The Delta State Government, yesterday, shut Ogume Grammar School, Ogume in Ndokwa West Local Council with immediate effect.

The Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, who made the announcement during a meeting with school administrators in Asaba, explained that the decision followed the heinous activities of miscreants that resulted in the institution being set ablaze on October 14 this year.

She said the move was in the best interest of the community and the state, as the safety of teachers and students remains paramount to the current administration.
Lamenting that the whole structure and learning materials were razed, the commissioner charged the community to bring the perpetrators to book to serve as deterrent to others.

Ezewu urged the community leaders and relevant stakeholders to show genuine commitment towards the rebuilding of the school.

She warned parents against re-enrolling their children in neighbouring learning institutions, imploring them to wholeheartedly contribute towards the rebuilding process, just as she disclosed that the principal that was severely beaten up by the hoodlums had been discharged from the hospital.

In his remarks, the member representing Ndokwa West Constituency in the House of Assembly, Charles Emetulu, who deplored the arson, decried that the school was one of the best-equipped with modern science laboratory, Information Communications Territory (ICT) centre, as well as teaching and learning materials.

He advised the community to exhibit genuine intention towards fixing the destroyed facilities.
