Disquiet as police detain two pregnant women

There was palpable tension at Eredo community in Epe area of Lagos yesterday as two pregnant women were allegedly arrested and detained at the Epe Divisional headquarters, allegedly on the orders of a notorious land grabber in the community.

The reason for the arrest was not known, but an eyewitness said the women were being held for the ‘sins’ of their husbands who had taken refuge in the nearby bush for fear of being killed by thugs from the said land grabber.

According to sources, the women identified as Mrs. Olumuyiwa Adejoke, 33, and Rita Sanni, 25, both at different stages of pregnancy had gone to the Police station to report cases of assault and battery against some hoodlums allegedly working for the land grabber in the community but had their case turned against them after money changed hands.

Sources hinted further that the particular land grabber had been locked in a serious faceoff with members of the community over unsuccessful attempts to have his name on the original survey plan of the community land stressing that those opposed to his plans were being harassed by the Police.

It is gathered that most of the villagers have since fled the community in fear.

Sources further said that when the female DCO of the station saw the degree of injuries sustained by the pregnant women, she berated the rampaging hoodlums for physically assaulting them.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, said he was in a meeting when reached for comments.
