Dogara fires appropriation committee chairman
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, yesterday, stunned members of the chamber when he announced sack of the chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibril.
Dogara said Jibril would be replaced immediately by Mustapha Dawaki Bala (Kudu/Warawa- Kano State).
“He met me and said he does not think he would continue as the committee chairman, due to pressure of the work,” the Speaker said.
Jibril became unpopular among his colleagues when he was accused of voting about N4bn in the 2016 appropriation for projects in his constituency alone.
Also, recently, when the House debated the immunity clause for the National Assembly leadership, members verbally assaulted Jibrin with shouts of “Ole!” (Thief).
Addressing journalists alongside members of the committee after the plenary, yesterday, Jibril said his resignation was a personal decision he took after consultation with members of his family.
He thanked the Speaker for giving him opportunity to serve as chairman of one of the high profile committees, and said he would make public other issues behind his decision to quit in due course.
