The Nistad Empowerment Foundation has stressed the need for government at all levels to ensure that Nigeria’s youths are not left behind in the global technological shift.
Nistad Executive Director, Ms. Ada Jabaru, who made this call at an occasion to celebrate the 10th anniversary of World Youth Skills Day, called on Nigerian governments at all levels to increase investment in youth employability, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and digital skills.
According to Jabaru, this year’s theme, “Youth Empowerment Through AI and Digital Skills,” emphasises the increasing importance of equipping young people for a swiftly changing digital economy.
Disclosing that the foundation’s goal is to provide access to education and skills that prepare young people for today’s workforce, Jabaru emphasised that the organisation is committed to ensuring that girls and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are involved in shaping the future of technology.
“We believe they can be leaders and creators in the AI space, not just consumers,” she said.
Jabaru noted that AI and digital technologies could help address several pressing challenges in Nigeria, notably insecurity, access to healthcare, water scarcity, and electricity shortages.
She further disclosed that Nistad has been actively implementing initiatives that equip young people with practical digital competencies.
“These include training in AI, women’s empowerment programs, entrepreneurship support, primary healthcare outreach, and job linkage services.
“The foundation also partners with organisations across Nigeria, Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom to promote inclusion and innovation.
“As we mark a decade of World Youth Skills Day, we urge governments, schools, and development partners to prioritise investments in future-focused skills.
“With the right support, young people can become powerful drivers of change,” she concluded.
