A safety and security expert, Amb. Nurain Abayomi Mumuni, on Monday, urged Nigerians to avoid using mobile phones close to fuel tankers.

Mumuni, who is a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), emphasised that the use of mobile phones near fuel tankers could trigger an explosion.

The APC chieftain made these declarations while extending condolences to Governor Umaru Bago and the good people of Niger State over the tragic death of their citizens that lost their lives in the petroleum tanker explosion that occurred over the weekend.

The Police had confirmed the death of 73 persons following the tragic tanker explosion that occurred at the Dikko Junction, Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, Niger State, on Saturday.

Reacting to the incident, Mumuni urged Nigerians to avoid using mobile phones near fuel tankers, saying that they can potentially trigger explosions if they are used in a way that creates a spark.

In a statement signed by his Media Aide, Rasheed Abubakar, the political leader said that addressing literacy and awareness regarding fuel tanker safety is crucial to preventing explosions in Nigeria.

Mumuni also advised Nigerians to report to local authorities if they observe a fuel tanker leaking or parked in an unsafe location.

The APC leader said: “My condolences go to the Executive Governor of Niger State Bago and victims of the fuel tanker explosion. Also, addressing literacy and awareness regarding fuel tanker safety is crucial to preventing explosions in Nigeria.

“Again, Nigerians must familiarise themselves with emergency response procedures in case of a fuel tanker accident and know who to contact and how to react. If one observes a fuel tanker leaking or parked in an unsafe location, report it to local authorities immediately.

“Nigerians should never conduct welding, cutting, or any activities that produce sparks near fuel tankers to prevent ignition. Always keep a safe distance from fuel tankers, especially during loading and unloading operations.

“Parents must teach children about the dangers of fuel tankers and ensure they know to stay clear of these vehicles and report any issues to an adult.”

He also called on Nigerians to adhere strictly to traffic signs and signals when near fuel tankers, saying: “Never attempt to overtake them recklessly and be aware of warning symbols on fuel tankers that signify the presence of hazardous materials.

“Avoid using mobile phones near fuel tankers, as they can potentially cause static electricity, leading to explosions.”
