DPR seals 31 illegal gas stations in Akwa Ibom

Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Eket Field Office in Akwa Ibom State, sealed 31 illegal gas stations in the state between January 9 and 16, 2020.

The Operations Controller, Mr. Tamunoiminabo Kingsley-Sundaye, disclosed this to newsmen in Eket yesterday.

According to him, out of the 31 stations, five were operating without valid licences.

“A total of 31 illegal gas stations were sealed; out of the 31, five have not renewed their licences. Whereas the remaining 26 are illegal considering the siting of the stations and operations,” he said.

The illegal gas stations were sealed in Eket and Uyo, the state capital, and most of them were carrying out dangerous operations in the state, he added.

“In refilling cylinders, they just get hose and start transferring gas from one cylinder to another without considering laid down safety rules and regulations.”

He said the department would give the names and locations of the illegal gas stations to security operatives to put eagle eyes on them.

While promising to work tirelessly to overcome the challenges faced by the downstream sector, the DPR warned that any illegal gas station that violated the seal order would be prosecuted by law enforcement agencies.
