Ebonyi gubernatorial race: Battle for supremacy looms

AS March 11 governorship election draws nearer politicians in Ebonyi State are not left out in the build up especially those from the southern part of the state where the ruling People Democratic Party PDP has zoned the governorship position to.

The political parties involved are putting in all efforts to come out victorious in a battle which nothing is being left out .
Everything is coming in handy including ethnic biases, name dropping, blackmail as well as spurious endorsements.

It is noteworthy that only members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are more visibly warming up for the contest as the other parties that were supposed to give the PDP a good fight are engulfed in one crisis or the other.
Yet, it seems that it is the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) that is poised to give PDP a run for their money following their aggressive grassroots mobilisation and campaign and a party manifesto which many political observers in the state believe to be people-oriented.

In addition, APGA’s flag-bearer, Senator Anthony Agbo is being seen by many as a man , who , if given the opportunity , will turn around the state in terms of infrastructural and human development .

Senator Agbo has carved a name for himself, one the leaders in the state said because when he was a Senator he paid attention to both human and infrastructural needs of his constituents.

“If he can match the popularity of the PDP candidate Chief Dave Umahi , Agbo may as well be on his way to the Government House.

But PDP’s victory in the last Presidential and National Assembly election shows that the party is in firm grip of the state coupled with the recent defection of Labour Party chieftain and stepping down of the Independent Democrat governorship candidate all of which point toward victory for the PDP.

The All Progressives Congress APC and Labour Party LP which were supposed to give the PDP a good fight are struggling due to crisis over who controls the parties in the state, a development that may not augur well for them come next Saturday.

Just recently, some APC stakeholders had dumped the party and joined PDP while there were accusations and counter-accusations of gross misconduct, alleged embezzlement of funds , and running the party as if it were a personal property.

A source told The Guardian that the choice of governorship candidate and how he emerged raised a lot of issues that were yet to be resolved.
