Ebonyi youths defend Nwifuru, fault critic’s claims on governance

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru

The Ebonyi South Youths Assembly has urged critics of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration to base their assessments on verifiable facts, warning that misleading narratives could distort public perception of the government’s performance.
Addressing journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday, the National President of the Assembly, Comrade Odii Njoku, accused some critics of sustaining what he described as a campaign of misinformation against the state government despite what he called visible developmental strides across Ebonyi.

The group was reacting to a Facebook post by Chika Nwoba, who alleged that the Nwifuru administration had failed in education, healthcare, infrastructure, economic development and governance.
Njoku said while constructive criticism is essential in a democracy, it must be rooted in facts rather than exaggeration and selective presentation of issues.

According to him, the administration has recorded significant achievements across key sectors since assuming office.
He cited the state’s scholarship programme, under which more than 1,000 students have benefited, including about 300 studying abroad and over 700 pursuing postgraduate studies in Nigerian universities.

The group also highlighted the establishment of the ICT University at Oferekpe Agbaja, plans for a University of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering in Ezza, classroom construction and renovation, and improvements in teachers’ welfare.
On healthcare, the Assembly said the government has upgraded public hospitals with modern equipment, attracted a Regional Blood Bank project, strengthened primary healthcare services and restored potable water supply to parts of Abakaliki through the rehabilitation of major water schemes.

It also pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Ebonyi International Trade Centre, the Onuenyim Bridge linking Ebonyi and Benue states, road construction across the 13 local government areas, housing estates, community bridges and traditional rulers’ buildings.
The Assembly further listed the revival of the state-owned pipe production factory, the Ebonyi Industrial Cluster project and plans for a new cement manufacturing plant as initiatives aimed at boosting industrialisation, creating jobs and increasing internally generated revenue.

Njoku also praised the administration for reforms in the civil service, including improved workers’ welfare, promotions, recruitment of over 1,000 personnel, and payment of pensions and gratuities owed to retirees dating back to 1996.
He said the government has also implemented empowerment programmes for youths, women and farmers, while extending statutory benefits to host communities in mineral-producing areas.

On security, the group maintained that improved peace across the state has created a more conducive environment for investment and economic growth.
The Assembly dismissed suggestions that Ebonyi’s non-participation in a particular World Bank programme reflected poor governance, arguing that the state had instead secured several major development interventions,
including the Productive Use of Energy Agro-processing Equipment Grant, DARES, Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN), the African Development Bank Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Project, L-PRES, e-HEART, HOPE, IMPACT and the Nigeria for Women Programme Scale-Up.

The group urged residents to verify information before accepting claims circulated on social media and advised critics to focus on offering practical solutions rather than spreading narratives capable of discouraging investment and undermining public confidence.
It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policies that promote peace, accountability, unity and sustainable development in Ebonyi State.
