Yobe female IDPs fatten domestic animals using left-over foods

Female Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Pompomari camp in Damaturu, Yobe, have resorted to animal fattening using left-over foods provided in the camp.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) checks at the camp on Sunday revealed that the women engage in goats and sheep fattening to enhance their economic status.

NAN discovered that because of the improved feeding arrangement in the camp, they fed the animals with left-over of food, after drying same.

Bulama Shefuri a community leader and resident of the camp said the female IDPs gathered remnants of food prepared at the camp and dry same to serve as animal feeds for fattening.

“Look at these food remnants spread in the sun, they are being dried to serve the animals; it is from what is left of the food served to the IDPs that now serve as animal feeds,” said Bulama, as he showed NAN Correspondent left-over of food spread under the sun to dry

Mrs Habiba Makinta, an IDP, said she arrived the camp with two goats and disposed them after fattening same.“They (goats) fetched me good price after fattening. I will soon replace them with the proceeds,” she told NAN.

Mrs Hauwa Mallum, a mother and resident of the camp, said they enjoyed adequate food supply and always had excess.

“l have also bought a goat and joined other women in drying the left-over of foods to feed my goat” she said.

Alhaji Musa Jidawa, Executive Secretary, Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), told NAN that the agency introduced additional food and fruits on the menu during the Ramadan fast period.

“We also slaughter cows to provide them with meat; as you can see (pointing to a cow), that cow tied to the stake will be slaughtered today (Sunday)” Jidawa said.
