Economy: Government not ignoring expert advice, says presidency

The Presidency has described as untrue, allegations that the Muhammadu Buahari-led administration is acting alone and ignoring useful advice from experts on ways to best move the nation’s economy forward.

The Presidency has described as untrue, allegations that the Muhammadu Buahari-led administration is acting alone and ignoring useful advice from experts on ways to best move the nation’s economy forward.
Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media, Laolu Akande, stressed that the Federal Government is in constant consultation with technocrats through the economic management team headed by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo and cannot be said to be alone in tackling the nation’s current economic crisis.
Two former governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN),Prof. Charlse Soludo, and Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi had in recent times called on the Federal Government to review certain key economic policies which they say are counter productive to development of the economy, just as other critics have accused government of stifling the economy and refusing to yield to advice to shift grounds.
Akande added that at the moment, the Federal Government is in possession of several recommendations from different experts on how to salvage the economy, many of which he said are already being implemented.
“It is not true that the Federal Government is not making use of expert advice. First of all, don’t forget that the president has also constituted a cabinet made up of technocrats. And there is an economic management team that has been put together to work specifically on the economy, to give an oversight and offer advice to the president. That management team is composed of institutional representatives who bring their technocratic experience to the fore,” he said.
He further said that an economic team made up of the Finance Minister, the Budget and Planning Minister, the CBN governor, special adviser to the president on economic matters meet every week, in addition to also meeting regularly with private sector personalities before having another regular meeting with the president.
The vice president’s spokesman also noted that a month ago, a meeting of economic management team held in Abuja with notable economists like Bismack Rewane, among others to fashion out the way forward for the economy,adding that interface between economic experts and the economic management team holds on regular basis.
