The Labour Party governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chijioke Edeoga, has called on Federal Government to conduct an urgent audit of guns approved for services in the state to avert what he described as “a war” on people of the state.

Edeoga, who raised the alarm, in a statement he signed and released in Enugu, yesterday, also alleged plans by some politicians to use armed thugs to frustrate efforts being made to ensure free and fair governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

He said that guns, which were approved for procurement by Federal Government to augment efforts of conventional security services in the state, are allegedly being distributed to political thugs for Saturday’s elections.

He said if urgent steps are not taken to arrest thugs, allegedly imported into the state to destabilise the elections, those he accused of trying to steal the elections are determined to make Saturday’s elections a bloody process.

He said: “From the look of things, what a particular political party is preparing for is not an election, but war. It is war against the people of the state; a war against democratic progress in Nigeria, and war against the popular will of the people. We are making this call, because we are also aware that these men are being armed and prepared to operate freely, appearing in police, army and civil defence uniforms, a decoy that would enable free movement across the state and to all areas targeted for their planned attacks.”

Going into specifics, the Labour Party governorship candidate said the areas allegedly being targeted include: Isi Uzo, Uzo Uwani, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South and Udenu councils, as well as parts of the state capital.

He urged security agencies to take steps to protect the integrity of the elections.

He added: “We have it on good authority that the plan by these enemies of the state is to target many rural communities in the state, where our intelligence has informed disruption of voting and/or frustration of collation of results is their core objective.”
