The Edo State Government has officially commenced the 2026 farming season, calling on farmers to adopt innovation and best practices and utilise improved inputs made available to them.
Flagging off the season at the State Agric Hub at the weekend, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Jerry Uwangue, said the event was not just to mark the beginning of the farming season but also to sensitise farmers on the importance of timely planting, adoption of improved agricultural practices, and effective utilisation of modern inputs such as improved seeds, fertilisers, agrochemicals, and mechanised equipment.
“Experience has shown that early and well-coordinated planting, combined with the use of quality inputs, significantly increases productivity, enhances crop yield, and ultimately guarantees food availability for our growing population,” he said.
The commissioner, who expressed the Edo State Government’s commitment to strengthening agriculture as the “backbone of our economy, ensuring food security for our people, and improving the livelihoods of our farmers,” noted that the programme aligns with the Governor’s SHINE Agenda, particularly in the area of economic growth and food sufficiency.
Uwangue further stated that the government is committed to creating an enabling environment that supports farmers and agribusinesses to thrive, urging farmers to make the most of the farming season.
“The success of this season largely depends on your commitment, resilience, and willingness to adapt to modern techniques,” he added.
He also called on local councils and agricultural extension officers to intensify efforts to mobilise and educate farmers across the state.
On her part, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Rebecca Osedebamen Bamaiyi, described the event as a platform for farmers, agribusinesses, and partners to interact, access improved agricultural inputs, and gain valuable knowledge on modern farming practices.
