The Edo State Government has expressed its commitment to equipping youths with the latest digital and technological skills to remain relevant in the digitally evolving world.

The government also expressed its readiness to support youths who are digitally inclined but lack the resources to start something in this technology-driven area.

The State Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, disclosed this in Benin at the flag-off of a six-month Advanced Job-Ready Tech Skills Training, organised by the Edo State Government in collaboration with Google and DeepTech Ready.

The commissioner, who made the state government’s intention known after a 400-level Mechatronics Engineering student at the University of Benin, Miss Elizabeth Chioma Chiketarauba, showcased a Torquenova 2-seater electric vehicle she invented, and urged students to think outside the box and be innovative.

Iyamu announced a million naira support for the student on behalf of the state government, disclosing that for the digital skill drive, the “governor has approved a revamp of the state tech hub.”

He added that no fewer than 25 Computer-based Test (CBT) centres were about to be created for the purpose.

The commissioner, who said no fewer than 800 youths, most of whom are students, will be trained in digital skills in the next six months, noted: “We are encouraging our students to join so that they can take the opportunity.

“We are going to be training about 800 of our students in tech skills so that we can give them the opportunity in the international space.”

Iyamu disclosed that the state government is going to be doing a serious drive in terms of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres, so that students can be put together to learn, so that they can also compete anywhere in the world.”
