The Edo State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has convened its 2026 Leadership Retreat, where notable figures, including Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), and Prof. Ernest Omoti, President of the NMA, were honored with Awards of Excellence.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, Chairman of the Edo State NMA, praised Prof. Ize-Iyamu for her exemplary leadership and significant contributions to the advancement of tertiary healthcare.
He also highlighted Prof. Omoti’s exceptional national leadership and advocacy efforts for physicians throughout Nigeria.
According to him, the duo were officially inducted into the Nigerian Medical Association Hall of Fame, marking a significant recognition of their impactful work in the medical field.
Dr. Oseghale said that the retreat was marked by lucid lectures and very cerebral engagements amongst healthcare leadership in Edo State.
According to him, key discussions focused on leadership, governance, innovation, and strengthening healthcare delivery systems across the state.
“The program climaxed with an award ceremony honoring notable leaders and worthy partners who have significantly advanced healthcare and the medical profession.
“Special Recognition and Awards were also presented in various categories, including medical elders for decades of mentorship and service built on the foundation of medicine in Edo as well as doctors in the Political/Public Service Landscape.”Dr. Oseghale said.
Personalities honored include Dr. Anthonia Njoku, who is the Medical Director, Edo Specialist Hospital, Dr. Richard Edosa, Member, Edo State House of Assembly, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, Commissioner of Health, Delta State, Dr. Chris Ekiyor,Past Student Union Government President & Past Commissioner, Delta State, Dr. Adesuwa Uroghide, Chief Executive Officer, Edo State Health Regulation and Monitoring Agency, among others.
Dr.Oseghale said the NMA Edo State celebrates these icons of service, leadership, and partnership and remains committed to building a stronger, more collaborative health sector for Edo people.
