Edo PDP mourns Buhari as Okpebholo halts transport company launch

Amid national morning, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State on monday mourned the passing of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, expressing its condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Buhari family, and all Nigerians on the passing of an uncommon democrat, patriot, and elder statesman.

The opposition party also expressed displeasure with the Edo State Government’s move to commission the New Edo Line Transport company at a time the nation was mourning Buhari’s passing.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Edo PDP Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, and made available to newsmen in Benin.

Nehikhare described the planned commissioning scheduled for today (Monday, July 14th, 2025) by Governor Monday Okpebholo and the FCT Minister as a callous and insensitive jamboree.

Nehikhare said, “It is deeply disturbing and utterly disrespectful that while Nigerians were still coming to terms with the loss of a former President and a prominent national figure, the Edo State Governor and his associates chose to throw a public celebration complete with a live band—dancing and reveling, as if in mockery of the moment.

“This shameful display not only reflects a gross insensitivity to the mood of the nation but also dishonours the memory of a man who, despite political differences, remains a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“Regardless of former President Buhari’s stance during the 2020 elections, his passing deserved solemnity, not celebration. Especially when he insisted that the democratic process must not be compromised and interfered with.”

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government has abruptly cancelled the scheduled commissioning of the New Edo Line Transport Company to honour the passing of Buhari.

The official commissioning of the New Edo Line Transport company, owned and operated by the Edo State Government, was already set to commence when the Edo State Government abruptly cancelled the ceremony.

Recall that Governor Okpebholo had scheduled today, July 14, 2025, for the commissioning of 56 new Toyota Hiace buses for the state-owned transport service, Edoline, as part of efforts to improve public transportation.
