EFCC denies targeting Obasanjo library, to arraign 23 fraud suspects today

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was not the target of its recent operation in which 93 suspected internet fraudsters were arrested.

Management of the Presidential Library on Wednesday demanded N3.5 billion in compensation and a public apology from EFCC, describing the operation as an invasion of private property and infringement of OOPL’s rights as a corporate entity, but in a statement yesterday, EFCC’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale, said the arrests were made at a hotel located within the OOPL after intelligence that the suspects were holding a pool party to celebrate alleged illicit activities.

Oyewale added that 23 out of the 93 suspects would be arraigned before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos today for alleged involvement in internet fraud.

Oyewale, who revealed that other suspects would be arraigned in batches, said that upon profiling, almost all of them were indicted for alleged offences bordering on impersonation, identity fraud, and internet fraud.
