EU, Nigeria deepen cooperation on trade, security

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen gives a press conference

Nigeria and the European Union (EU) on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, security and investment, amid growing global economic and geopolitical uncertainties.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, conveyed the bloc’s position during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at his residence in Lagos.

The meeting was attended by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.

Speaking to journalists after the talks, Kallas said discussions focused on expanding collaboration in key areas, including security, trade, investment and critical raw materials.

She described Nigeria and the EU as “like-minded partners,” stressing the need for closer cooperation in response to evolving global security challenges.

“The global security situation is very serious, as the geopolitical landscape shows. Countries that believe in a rules-based international order must work together more closely,” she said.

Kallas added that both sides explored new opportunities to boost investment and trade relations, as well as deepen cooperation in critical sectors such as raw materials, security and cybersecurity.

“We discussed investment and trade, and there is room to do more. We are also looking at cooperation on critical raw materials, as well as security and cybersecurity, where we can strengthen our partnership further,” she noted.

President Tinubu, in his remarks, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to sustaining and expanding its partnership with the EU, while expressing appreciation for the bloc’s continued support to the country.
