Ex-chief of staff laments insecurity in Rivers community

Okocha

• Demands apology over youths’ defamatory remarks

A chief in Rumuigbo community in Obio-Akpor Local Council of Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has lamented insecurity in the community and called for peaceful co-existence in the state for a better society.

Okocha spoke in reaction to the rising crisis involving arrest and alleged abduction of some youths in the community.

Recall that some youths from the community had staged a protest alleging that he (Okocha) masterminded the abduction of two leaders of the community, one Bobby Ezekiel, and others

The group also alleged that Okocha always used his position to terrorise the community rather than champion its development.
But, Okocha, who was a Chief of Staff to the state government under former Governor Chibuike Amaechi, said he is an apostle of peace, and always preach for peaceful coexistence because “at the stage and level one has attained in life, there are positions and actions you can take and it might ignite crisis and people may ask questions”.

While noting the importance of peace, Okocha gave leader of the protesters, Reginald Amadi, and his group 14 days to apologise to him over alleged defamatory remarks against his person or be ready to face judicial processes.

“For the attempts to tarnish my reputation, I give them 14 days to apologise, if they don’t in 14 days, I will press defamation charges in the court against them,” he said.

The Ex- Chief of staff said the missing community leaders often used weapons to threaten and collect money from market women in Rumuigbo community.  He said: “People who are not licensed to carry guns and are carrying guns are criminals, they terrorise the community people with guns and it is very wrong.”

“They claimed that I am a kidnapper, and they don’t have any information for the police against me, so what justifies their allegations.
“I am here, let them come and take me, the kidnapper. I have paved the way for the employment of over 36 persons in Rumuigbo, yet this is not acknowledged.”The former Chief of Staff asked all camps in the state political scene to calm their nerves, do the right thing and move the state forward.
