Ex-IGP Baba withdraws from APC governorship race

The former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba has withdrawn from the 2027 All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship race for the four other aspirants in Yobe state.

According to the ruling party, the four gubernatorial aspirants included the former Yobe State Secretary to Government (SSG), Baba Malam Wali, Senator Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, Barrister Kashim Musa Tumsah and Engineer Mai Hajja.

Announcing his last-minute withdrawal from the governorship on Thursday in Damaturu, Baba said: “I today humbly expressed my gratitudes to the citizens of Yobe state and acknowledged the guidance of prominent political leaders, including the Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima and the governors of Yobe and Borno states.”

After an extensive consultations with the party leaders, elders, and key stakeholders, the ex-IGP made the difficult political decision to step aside from the gubernatorial aspiration at the forthcoming 2027 general polls in the state.

Baba cited his last-minute withdrawals from the governorship aspirations to a commitment to what he described as, “party unity and stability to sweep the 2027 general elections in the state and the country at large.”

He, therefore urged the teeming party supporters in the state to remain calm and continue to back APC, the ruling party and the eventual gubernatorial candidate,that will emerge next week.

Baba also emphasized his ongoing commitment to the development of the state and expressed confidence in the party’s future for a sustained economic growth and development of the state.

As the political landscapes continue to unfold, Baba’s withdrawal from the governorship race marks a significant development for the APC and its numerous supporters in Yobe state.
