A wave of commendation has followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to overhaul the Federal Character Commission (FCC), with NEDC Board member and former lawmaker Rep. Sam Onuigbo describing the appointments as “a masterstroke in building a great nation.”
Onuigbo, who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South in the House of Representatives for two terms, highlighted the appointment of former lawmaker Ayo Hulayat Omidiran as FCC Chair, describing her as “level-headed, team-spirited, and a unifying figure.” He stated that her track record, from serving as Deputy Chair of the House Committee on Sports to advocating for women’s representation, makes her the ideal candidate for the role.
The former lawmaker also celebrated the inclusion of his successor as Abia Finance Commissioner, Obinna Oriaku, alongside former House colleagues Jerry Alagbaoso and Omidiran, noting that President Tinubu had demonstrated tact, patience, and foresight in assembling the FCC team.
“This is a time of national reformation, and the President has picked leaders who can deliver,” Onuigbo said, adding that Omidiran’s appointment comes at a moment when Nigerian women’s sports — from the Falcons to D’Tigress — are flying the national flag high.
Onuigbo, who sponsored the landmark Climate Change Act 2021, expressed confidence that the new FCC will work hand in hand with the President to deliver on the Renewed Hope Agenda and strengthen unity across the federation.
