Experts decry screen addiction, offer tips for wellness

Optometrists have decried the overt concentration on screen, which affects sight and the brain.

They warned against procuring glasses from black market due inappropriate sizing and related health hazards.

The experts also cautioned against self-medication and overdose, both which result in blindness, glaucoma, hypertension and other ailments.

The warnings were given at a free eye screening and presentation of glasses to mark the World Sight Day, yesterday, by Ilera F’agba Foundation, in partnership with LEAP Africa, LAAN and Major Skillz Limited.

Retired Ophthalmic Nurse, Rimvyek Nymyel, urged Nigerians to go for eye check at least once yearly, and avoid seeking help at dying minutes.

He explained that the best ways to care for the eye include personal hygiene, constant checkup, healthy eating and job choice.

Lamenting the hazards caused by jobs that require full screen time, he advised workers to demand protective gears.

Convener and optometrist, Oladimeji Oyenekan, said Nigerians rank very low in eye care, as they pay more attention to money than health.

He charged youths on work-life balance and periodic breaks while working on the screen to promote healthy living.

Also, the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Federal Capital Territory, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, has implored Abuja residents to pay attention to their sight with a view to reducing avoidable blindness and visual impairment.

At a programme to celebrate the global event in the nation’s capital, with the theme, ‘Love your eyes at work’, Fasawe lamented that most Nigerians were in the habit of seeking help at late hours.

She stated that proper care of the eye is critical for maximum productivity.

The mandate secretary noted that over the years, the FCT administration has continuously strengthened the eye care delivery system, with the establishment of clinics in 10 secondary health care facilities owned and operated by the FCTA.
