Medical experts have called for deliberate system of principles to stop public office holders, including the President from travelling to foreign countries for medical care.

Medical experts have called for deliberate system of principles to stop public office holders, including the President from travelling to foreign countries for medical care.

They also called for a total overhaul of the country’s health facilities, lamenting that many Public Health Facilities are in bad shape and already occupied by animals, such as rats, scorpions, rabbits and snakes.

They spoke at a free health programme organised by Lekki Free Trade Zone Development Company, at Ilege, Tiye, Idasho and Imobido communities at Ibeju Lekki, which was rounded-off yesterday. The event featured free health clinic, drugs and medication, reading glasses, dental care and hearing aids, among others, for residents.

The Chief Executive Officer, Canterbury Health Consult, Dr. Olalekan Makinde said it was painful that even President Muhammadu Buhari was comfortable travelling abroad for medical attention.

Makinde added that Nigerian politicians are treated abroad by Nigerians, who relocated to where their work would be more appreciated, adding that the brain drain in the country needs urgent attention. He said: “Our government should be people-oriented and, the salary and allowances of our political office holders should be reviewed. We must stop our public office holders from travelling abroad for medical tourism. This is the only way to go. If we can stop them, Nigeria will move forward. Most of the doctors they are going to see abroad are Nigerians. Many of these doctors abroad are my colleagues, some of them are not better than us, but they have better facilities and equipment to work with.

“The most painful part is that even our President, Muhammadu Buhari still goes abroad for medical check up, while there are doctors who are capable in Nigeria, we have better hands here. Nigerians need to stand up against these anomalies. We are all human being and all lives are equal.”
