Residents of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, were thrown into panic in the early hours of Thursday, May 1, 2025, as multiple explosions occurred at the Giwa Barracks.
The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 12:05 am, prompting residents living near the barracks to flee their homes due to the loud blasts and the sight of red flares illuminating the night sky above the military installation.
While the exact cause of the explosions and subsequent fire remains unknown, eyewitnesses in the vicinity confirmed that the source of the blasts appeared to be within the armoury area of the barracks.
Residents in the area stated that firefighters were present at the scene, with the sound of sirens audible throughout the vicinity.
In response to the incident, the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Dr. Umar Kadafur, issued a call for calm and patience among the populace.
He clarified that the explosions were the result of a fire incident that had erupted at the armoury of Giwa Barracks.
Dr. Kadafur dismissed any reports speculating that the incident was an attack by Boko Haram insurgents.
He urged all residents to remain indoors, assuring them that security operatives were actively managing the situation.
